London Buses route 263

London Buses route 263 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Barnet Hospital and Highbury Barn, it is operated by Metroline.
==History==
Route 263 commenced operating on 16 January 1971 between Barnet High Street and Farringdon Street via Archway station, Holloway, King's Cross and Grays Inn Road with AEC Routemasters. On 15 July 1972, it was converted to one man operation with Daimler Fleetlines.
On 23 April 1983, route 263 was withdrawn south of Archway station, but extended north to Potters Bar station replacing part of route 134. On 21 June 1986, it was curtailed to Potters Bar garage, with the section to Potters Bar station being replaced by route 84.
In 1989, Metrobuses were replaced by Scania low floor buses. These buses were only used by the route for a year. When they were replaced by double decker buses, the route was also slightly modified between Barnet High Street and Barnet Hospital.
On 25 June 1994, the route was withdrawn between Barnet Hospital and Potters Bar garage, being replaced by route 234.
Upon being put up for tender, the route passed to Leaside Buses' Wood Green garage on 3 February 1996. On 28 April 2001, the route's operation was sub-contracted to First London's Northumberland Park garage.
When next tendered, route 263 passed to Metroline's Potters Bar garage on 2 February 2002, moving to Holloway on 26 July 2003, before returning on 27 March 2004.
Metroline retained the route when next re-tendered, with a new contract commencing on 7 February 2009.〔(Bus tender results Route 263 ) Transport for London 19 June 2008〕 On this date the route was extended to Holloway.〔(Extension to London bus route ) ''View London'' 6 February 2009〕
On 26 July 2014, the route was extended from Holloway to Highbury Barn.〔(Route 263 Consultation Report to Highbury Barn ) Transport for London May 2014〕〔(Proposed extension of route 263 to Highbury Barn ) Transport for London〕 The purpose of the extension was to provide additional services to Highbury and Islington station.
Many residents of Highbury find the buses terminating near Highbury Barn, by the famous clock tower, to be unsafe and problematic, as there is insufficient space on the narrow residential roads for the extra bus traffic, and are asking TfL to consider another terminus for the 263.
